The Best Selling Comics Ever

Comics have been traditionally thought of as entertainment for children and teens, they have long surpassed that stereotype. Men and women from all walks of life immerse themselves in comic book universes, why do you think Marvel and DC movie franchises have been so successful. Some characters are just so iconic that comic fans won’t let go after a lifetime of adventures.

Which ones have captured our hearts and some of our hard earned cash to become some of the best selling comics ever?

Here’s the list:

1. Superman

Does is it really shock anyone that the Man of Steel is number one? Selling more than 600 million copies since its inception back in 1938, the strong and handsome alien from Krypton has become our most beloved superhero.

2. Batman

The world was introduced to Batman back in 1939 and after countless movies, TV series and video game adaptations Batman is just a part of our culture. Bruce Wayne captured the imaginations of children and adults to the tune of 460 million sales. The revenue for merchandise and movies is in the billions, making it one of the most successful franchises ever.

Pretty impressive feat for writer and illustrator Eiichiro Oda.

5. X-Men

Another creation that come from the genius that is Stan Lee, these mutants showed up on the scene back in 1963 and have since generated more than 270 million in comic book sales. After the hugely successful string of movies, cartoon series and video games from the series Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto have all become household names.

6. Captain America

Fittingly, Captain America made his debut back in 1941 just before America entered the war and the first issue sold more than a million copies, an unheard of number back then. Then again the very first issue featured the Captain punching Hitler on the cover. This is another big franchise to come from Marvel and it has more than 210 million sales.

You might dismiss the comic book industry as one for kids, teens and nerds, but it is nowhere near that simple. Comic con in cities all over the world are enormously successful conventions and dollar for dollar the comic book industry generates more revenue than plenty of fortune 500 companies.

Best Places to Find Comics

Best Places to Find Comics

The X-Men, Spiderman, Iron Man and now the Avenger, all are blockbuster movies and that has inspired more comic book fans than ever before.  Collecting comic books isn’t just for nerds and kids anymore.  Adults are revisiting the comic books they had as children and adding to the old collections.  Collecting comics can be an expensive hobby, so here are some of the best places to find comics without breaking the bank.  Here is a video outlining how to get your collection started.

eBay sells everything under the sun, including some pretty rare and valuable comics.  You can find some really good deals here on single issues as well as picking up someone else’s entire collection.

Craigslist, like eBay, also sells everything under the sun.  Finding comics on Craigslist can be hit or miss but it’s a free site and it doesn’t hurt to look, make sure you check nearby towns as well.  Craigslist is a classified site so you do have the option to do a little negotiating and maybe get a better deal.

Online Stores

There are lots of online stores that offer huge selections of comic books, they probably won’t have deals as good as eBay or Craigslist but you’ll stand a better chance of finding what you’re looking for.  Prices can vary from a good bargain to market prices.

Garage Sales

You can find some good deals early on a Saturday morning if you make the rounds.  One thing about garage sales is you can stumble on a good collection that is greatly undervalued.  Sometimes the collections are huge and you can grab the entire thing for pennies on the dollar.  You will have to do a fair bit of searching but you could strike gold anywhere.  Most yard sales are unaware of any value to their collections and just want them out of the way.

Local Comic Bookstore

You can still get some great finds at your local comic store.  You may not get as good a price as online but there will be no waiting for delivery and you can check out the comic before you buy it.  Look in the bargain bin too, you may find another series that you enjoy.  Make friends with the staff or owner they will let you know anytime that new stock comes in and if something goes on sale.

These are the best ways to find cheap comic books.  You can grow your collection fairly quickly and have some fun at the same time.  At the end of the day you want to be able to grow your collection without having to take out a second mortgage on your house.
